A solid model or surface with thickness is usually required to create an STL file. However, it is possible to go from a point cloud to a polygonal mesh or STL file using specialist software.

The chord height defines the size of the facets. The smaller the chord height the greater the number of facets, and therefore the smoother and more accurate the geometry.

STL is the most commat format used for creating rapid prototypes, but can also be used to create a CAD file, for viewing and interrogation, for photorealistic renderring or for CNC machining.
